All first-time hunting license buyers, except apprentice license buyers, must successfully
complete a hunter education course before purchasing a hunting license. The hunting course
is designed to instill a code of ethics and responsibility, as well as provide instruction
on guns and how they work, types of ammunition, gun handling, field care of game, wildlife
identification, wildlife management, hunting regulations, and other topics. Statistics show
that hunter education has helped reduce the number of hunting related injuries and incidents.
By clicking the Hunting and Trapping Education Enrollment link of the Ohio Department of
Natural Resources below you will be able to sign-up for a hunter education course in your area
of the state when they are offered. When you complete registration, you need to download the
course work manual and study it thoroughly before attending the instructor led classroom portion
of the program. An exam will be conducted from material contained within the manual and lecture.
